Final Blog Post

I think it is so cool how so much of what we learn every day and what we retain has to do with what we see. An image can remain in someone’s memory for their entire life. Visual information fascinates me and that’s why my favorite project this semester was our most recent one, the video story. All except one of our projects utilize visuals, but this one utilized audio as well as video which made the project extra challenging. It’s so cool how great audio can enhance an image and vice versa. I really enjoyed videotaping something I do with my brothers all the time and they think my final video is hilarious. Hayden, my littlest brother keeps asking if any “ladies” are going to see him in the video so it’s awesome to me how they enjoy this as well. I think the skills I have used in this project especially will benefit my career in the future. My family owns a business and my dad does almost all the marketing on his own for it and makes his own commercials so I think that the skills I’ve learned here will translate really well. I think that the illustrator project also helped me for if I ever make a logo for a business of my own and make business cards or anything. There’s so many ways this all could fit into my career. The class didn’t change or influence my decision in choosing my career, but it has enhanced my chances and skill within the career I have chosen which is great. I feel like we covered a lot in this course and I can’t think of anything that I wish we would have covered. They all tie in together in some way, and this was even evident in the last project. I experimented with audio in premiere and it didn’t work too well for me so I did the audio editing in audition, and put this new edited version back into premiere. I think we covered a great amount of content and were all relevant and could be tied in together, which made none of it redundant and gave each topic and unit worthwhile and meaningful. Mostly the only other websites I used the adobe website and they had some nice tutorials. I especially used them for Photoshop and Premiere. Overall, I loved the class and I think I will use this stuff in the future with my career and in my family business. My dad is pretty old-fashioned and even he is becoming more technology savvy, and I’m seeing how the industry is becoming more reliant on media and communications outlets. I really enjoyed the class and it was set up in an awesome way where we could always get help where it was always prompt, as well as our assignments always being returned promptly and with feedback. I have definitely already started recommending this class to my friends because it is so great!

Thank you!

Final Video Story

Following the great feedback I got was fairly easy. Everyone was very descriptive of both what they liked, and what they thought I should change and improve upon. A lot of the peer feedback I got focused on how the middle segment of my video story was a little too long. I included too much basketball footage so I decided to cut a lot of it out, almost thirty seconds worth which gave me a lot of time to do a conclusion and still be in the time requirements. My peers thought that the story of the piece fit in nicely with my topic for the year, which is my family and what life has been like for me this year. I liked with this project how I didn’t have to give visual focus on myself in order to tell a goofy story about something that is important to me, which was something my peers liked as well. Some other feedback I got suggested that I edit the audio for my interview towards the end so it is more even with my voice. It took a lot of time and editing by after playing around with the program, keynotes, and some audio effects I finally got it to the point where it sounded pretty good without having to redo the interview and go through the same process again, because I would just end up editing any audio I had to make it sound more even and clear. The song I used during the basketball footage has a free to share, remix, and transform license and I thought the beat and tempo went well with my shots. It wasn’t the song I originally wanted to use, but it worked well (my original choice was taken down off soundcloud after I asked the person who supposedly made it if I could use the track). In order to further expand on the story and explain how the project ties into my topic, I added a conclusion to add more explanation. I didn’t want to change the footage or my opening voice over because I like how it represented the tone of the game with my brothers. I thought it was cool that we could do something goofy but also tell a story. I think the conclusion enhanced the story and helped out a little bit which is really important. I also think that by removing some of the basketball footage and shortening it also added to the story because not so much time was spent on just pure basketball stuff, but more the purpose of the piece, which is also the interview and now my conclusion. As for effects and transitions, I mostly used dip to black between shots because it fit the tempo and tone of most of the shots well, but when more flair was needed I used and iris or dissolve effect. When some parts of the audio sounded too loud or too quiet I used keynotes and a few dissolve effects to make them fit better together as well. I got a lot of great feedback which is so nice because this project was really challenging, because if you had a good video shot, bad volume or audio could ruin it and make you need to redo it. This took a lot of patience and effort, but I am really happy with how it turned out and every time I show my family they laugh a lot and love it! Thanks!

Also thanks to Minor Threat Recordings for listing the background music under the free to share and remix CC license! Here’s the link to where I got the song.

Script
• Over the past year since ive been at college away from home more, my ranking withing the family men has been left open. My two younger brothers have been fighting to move into the second in command spot only under my dad. They decided to settle things on the concrete.
• Eventually ask lily questions about why things have been hard on her.
• Get lots of b role for opening intro before basketball shots
• Clearly basketball wasn’t their strongsuit, maybe they can settle this paramount feud over

• Over the past year, my home and family have had to deal with turmoil due to my absence and being away at college. The vacancy of the third in command only behind my mom and dad has been tough on the whole family. Recently, both my youngers hayden and taylor have been vying to capitalize on the open position. Political instability has decimated family morale. They both decided to settle the stalemate once and for all. It was my moral obligation to record this battle royale for the record books as they settle things on the concrete.
• I’ll have a post-game interview with Hayden asking him how he will feel about his new position as second dominant male in the house. He should be ecstatic. Who knows what he will say.

Would you say that you and your older brother Taylor have a rivalry?
Where did you get your basketball skills?
How did you feel about that sweet yam and comeback?
What do you think the chances are we see you in the draft?
Would you say that you and your older brother Taylor have a rivalry?
Do you think your performance moved you ahead of Taylor in the family rankings?
Do you see the family getting back on track?

This whole year my focus has been on my family and how it is important for me to be close with them. As much as this is a goofy power struggle between my brothers, it is also a representation of what every day is like for us. As my first year of college comes to a close and summer begins, more of my days will be spent with my family fooling around and enjoying each other’s company. Hayden may have beat Taylor this time, but when they team up against me, I’m the one who always wins.
