I think it is so cool how so much of what we learn every day and what we retain has to do with what we see. An image can remain in someone’s memory for their entire life. Visual information fascinates me and that’s why my favorite project this semester was our most recent one, the video story. All except one of our projects utilize visuals, but this one utilized audio as well as video which made the project extra challenging. It’s so cool how great audio can enhance an image and vice versa. I really enjoyed videotaping something I do with my brothers all the time and they think my final video is hilarious. Hayden, my littlest brother keeps asking if any “ladies” are going to see him in the video so it’s awesome to me how they enjoy this as well. I think the skills I have used in this project especially will benefit my career in the future. My family owns a business and my dad does almost all the marketing on his own for it and makes his own commercials so I think that the skills I’ve learned here will translate really well. I think that the illustrator project also helped me for if I ever make a logo for a business of my own and make business cards or anything. There’s so many ways this all could fit into my career. The class didn’t change or influence my decision in choosing my career, but it has enhanced my chances and skill within the career I have chosen which is great. I feel like we covered a lot in this course and I can’t think of anything that I wish we would have covered. They all tie in together in some way, and this was even evident in the last project. I experimented with audio in premiere and it didn’t work too well for me so I did the audio editing in audition, and put this new edited version back into premiere. I think we covered a great amount of content and were all relevant and could be tied in together, which made none of it redundant and gave each topic and unit worthwhile and meaningful. Mostly the only other websites I used the adobe website and they had some nice tutorials. I especially used them for Photoshop and Premiere. Overall, I loved the class and I think I will use this stuff in the future with my career and in my family business. My dad is pretty old-fashioned and even he is becoming more technology savvy, and I’m seeing how the industry is becoming more reliant on media and communications outlets. I really enjoyed the class and it was set up in an awesome way where we could always get help where it was always prompt, as well as our assignments always being returned promptly and with feedback. I have definitely already started recommending this class to my friends because it is so great!

Thank you!

Final Video Story

Following the great feedback I got was fairly easy. Everyone was very descriptive of both what they liked, and what they thought I should change and improve upon. A lot of the peer feedback I got focused on how the middle segment of my video story was a little too long. I included too much basketball footage so I decided to cut a lot of it out, almost thirty seconds worth which gave me a lot of time to do a conclusion and still be in the time requirements. My peers thought that the story of the piece fit in nicely with my topic for the year, which is my family and what life has been like for me this year. I liked with this project how I didn’t have to give visual focus on myself in order to tell a goofy story about something that is important to me, which was something my peers liked as well. Some other feedback I got suggested that I edit the audio for my interview towards the end so it is more even with my voice. It took a lot of time and editing by after playing around with the program, keynotes, and some audio effects I finally got it to the point where it sounded pretty good without having to redo the interview and go through the same process again, because I would just end up editing any audio I had to make it sound more even and clear. The song I used during the basketball footage has a free to share, remix, and transform license and I thought the beat and tempo went well with my shots. It wasn’t the song I originally wanted to use, but it worked well (my original choice was taken down off soundcloud after I asked the person who supposedly made it if I could use the track). In order to further expand on the story and explain how the project ties into my topic, I added a conclusion to add more explanation. I didn’t want to change the footage or my opening voice over because I like how it represented the tone of the game with my brothers. I thought it was cool that we could do something goofy but also tell a story. I think the conclusion enhanced the story and helped out a little bit which is really important. I also think that by removing some of the basketball footage and shortening it also added to the story because not so much time was spent on just pure basketball stuff, but more the purpose of the piece, which is also the interview and now my conclusion. As for effects and transitions, I mostly used dip to black between shots because it fit the tempo and tone of most of the shots well, but when more flair was needed I used and iris or dissolve effect. When some parts of the audio sounded too loud or too quiet I used keynotes and a few dissolve effects to make them fit better together as well. I got a lot of great feedback which is so nice because this project was really challenging, because if you had a good video shot, bad volume or audio could ruin it and make you need to redo it. This took a lot of patience and effort, but I am really happy with how it turned out and every time I show my family they laugh a lot and love it! Thanks!

Also thanks to Minor Threat Recordings for listing the background music under the free to share and remix CC license! Here’s the link to where I got the song.

Where did you get your basketball skills?
How did you feel about that sweet yam and comeback?
What do you think the chances are we see you in the draft?
Would you say that you and your older brother Taylor have a rivalry?
Do you think your performance moved you ahead of Taylor in the family rankings?
Do you see the family getting back on track?

This whole year my focus has been on my family and how it is important for me to be close with them. As much as this is a goofy power struggle between my brothers, it is also a representation of what every day is like for us. As my first year of college comes to a close and summer begins, more of my days will be spent with my family fooling around and enjoying each other’s company. Hayden may have beat Taylor this time, but when they team up against me, I’m the one who always wins.

Video Story- Draft

For my draft story I really want to focus on what my audio story was all about, which was my family and what it has been like for all of us since I’ve been at college. I really wanted to open up on the little brother’s story line and have some fun with him and my other brother. A lot of our family time between my brothers and I is spent outside playing sports. We usually spend our time playing 2-on-1 basketball (because I’m way taller than them I don’t get a teammate). My youngest brother Hayden is always trying to prove he as better than us at something even though he is younger and smaller than us, so this was his perfect opportunity to show what he was made of. I got inspiration for this from the NBA playoffs which are currently under way. They always give players some flashy intro and some back-story to why they have performed the way they have, and I thought a blood brother battle is perfect motivation to humiliate one’s own brother. I try using different angles and shot types the best I could without wobbling the camera too much. I wanted to add further focus to my brothers since I used both of them before in my projects so in the intro I wanted to talk about the family dynamic in a comical way and lead up to their basketball battle. When they are first shown in the video I liked pausing on them with a title of their name next to it so the viewer can get a glimpse and if they have seen my other projects, gather a visual representation for them. I think the way I shot my brothers really emphasized how much smaller my younger bro was, but showed. The problem is the song I chose. The song has the free to share CC license. I was using it with a different link to a different song and got them mixed up and didn’t realize this one only had the free to share. It says you can use it as long as you don’t remix or transform it, and I didn’t do either of those, but I did shorten it so maybe that counts as transforming. I’m going to post it twice, once with the song and once without just in case and hopefully someone can help me understand better. If I can’t use it ill delete it or whatever it takes and I can use a new song with another CC license. As for the story tying in to my project, it is a continuation of my audio story and fits perfectly with my topic for the semester. I focus on my family and the daily things we do together such as yam on each other on the 8 foot hoop in the driveway. Originally I was using my mom’s digital video camera but couldn’t for the life of me find out how to get the files off the disk and onto my computer so instead I’m using my phones video camera that shoots in 1080p 30hd and translate the shots into premiere as such. My final interview with my brother is way too quiet and I haven’t figured out yet how to edit the volume the way I could in Audition but I will either do that or redo the interview. I also plan on shortening it so I can add in a conclusion to sum up the piece. Anyways, let me know what you guys think on how I can improve telling the story, what I should do about the song in the background, how I should further edit the shots, and anything else I should do to improve! Thanks!

Here are the links to the songs i used, one under the free to share and the other under free to remix. Let me know how to go about this properly. Thanks to FLstudio and Minor Threat Recordings

This is the one that has the free to share licence ^^^^^^^^^^^^. I decided not to post my project with the song just in case I was violating the CC license and instead used the song below which has the free to share and remix license (I used it in a previous project so I just plugged it in but plan on making changes later on)

To eliminate confusion, i just posted one version with the song i intended to because i wasnt sure about the CC license. this one is by Minor Threat Records “i told you tammy its mine”

Final Audio Story

For my final audio story I wanted to make a few major additions to what I had in my rough draft. A lot of feedback I got from classmates and my instructor suggested that I add an intro and conclusion to explain more about what the interviews are about and talk a little more about me. The conclusion helps in just wrapping up the piece as a whole and also gives a little more thought on to how I feel about my topic, which was living in Pullman and having my family in town with me. For the final audio story I wanted to keep the two interview clips I previously had with my dad and my brother because I thought they were the most entertaining and insightful. Some feedback I got suggested that instead of having my brother’s goofy interview first after the interview, I put my dad’s in first because it was a more serious clip. After that I thought it would be good to have a transition to my brother’s interview and talk about why my family is important to me and about my brother’s interview. I decided to leave in the intro to that interview because I wanted to leave in his “excellente” and I didn’t see how I could without my intro to him. Worth it if you ask me because it was pretty funny. After that I made a short conclusion just summing up the topic and how I feel. As for the mechanics and editing parts of the project, I focused on cutting out more unnecessary pauses because some people thought that it could be made shorter and more concise. I also worked with editing the volume so every part of the whole piece was around the same decibel range and no parts were overly loud. I also phased out the background music for part of my brothers interview all the way instead of slightly because I found out that what I thought was background noise was part of the song which was kind of annoying. I wanted to keep background music in slightly though throughout the rest of the piece because I thought it kept a nice tone and mood throughout. Some feedback thought I should phase it out completely though during the interviews but some thought it should be there. I thought it sounded best and most professional with a little background music as long as it wasn’t overpowering. Overall, I really liked the topic choice of how my life has been with my family living in Pullman and it talks a little bit about why I wanted to stay here to go to school here at WSU. I’m happy with all the feedback I got and it really helped me improve on my audio story.

Draft Audio Story

This is a very incomplete mix of my rough draft audio story for com 210. I still need to work on it a lot but I like the theme of it so far and the content but it is still a little messy. I am wondering what you guys think in terms of the intro I did and if that is something that works for this assignment? Should I have a conclusion? I thought for now and maybe even later no conclusion might work because the final words of the interview kind of sum up the topic pretty well and if I did add anything in it would be something pretty small just wrapping it up. I put together 4 different audio clips together not counting the music and mashed them up and cut out any unnecessary “ummm” like noises and faded them together and changed the volume for any parts that were too quiet with the volume decibel bar. Once I start talking I fade out the music and have it lightly in the background. Do you guys think it’s too quiet or just right? I think there might need to be some transitions as well that I add between the clips maybe explaining the story a little bit more. I just need to try to fit it into 3 minutes which is a problem because I am known to overdo it when it comes to limits (a 5 page paper may end up being 8 pages for me). As for content, I think where I have lived and my family have a huge effect on the person I am and I think focusing on my family’s thoughts of me and the place we have lived for 10 years is a great way to cover the topic of me! I think the music goes great with the topic as it is kind of upbeat but not overwhelming and it pauses it has make it easy to find a stopping place and to fade it out when I am completed. My laptop’s video recorder worked great and when there wasn’t any noise in the background, the sound levels I got in the program were great so I think I will stick to that recording device in the future. As for unnecessary background noise, there is a lot of it in the last half of my draft with my interview with my dad. I think it’s my little siblings but I can’t really tell. Do you guys know of any way to use an effect to reduce background/ambient noise? If not maybe I should just re-record that interview. So far I am happy with how this has turned out but I know I can change a lot to improve it and look forward to the Feedback!

Also thanks to Minor Threat Recordings for listing the background music under the free to share and remix CC license! Here’s the link to where I got the song.

Raw Audio Footage

Here are my Raw Audio Footage clips on SoundCloud. I didn’t include my tutorial but I do think I will use that and it is already posted below. I will probably continue to add more though to eventually include in my Audio Story.

These are some interviews I did with my family over the past 2 days. I asked them all what they felt about Pullman to hopefully make a compilation of a bio of where I live and why I love it but sadly they did not take it as seriously as I thought. I will for sure use my Dads and maybe the other ones or have them do a re-do with me.
Thanks!

Final Illustrator Logo

I’m really happy with how my final logo turned out. I improved it a lot based on my feedback I got from my instructor and my peers. The majority of the feedback I got had to do with the texture and size of the W part of my initial as well as the appearance of the C. The C was thinner in the handle area so that needed to be fixed and the W didn’t have the metal appearance I was looking for yet. I was told that it might look a lot better if I Moved the text of my name into the space between the magnet prods next to the W so I did that and made the font red like the Magnet itself. I also made the “handle” part of the magnet thicker because it was distorted to be thinner than the prods. I think this change also made it look more like a C. As for the W, I had a really hard time getting it to look like metal. This was probably something I could have done in Photoshop with mixing layers but with vectors it was really difficult. I decided to use a grain effect and played with the presets of the intensity and stuff a lot until it looked like a brushed steel W. I’m really happy with how much it looks like metal now because of the gradients of gray that are in it as well. I also added a drop shadow to make everything stick out just a little bit more. There is one thing that I couldn’t quite understand and that is that the W looks pixely sometimes. Sometimes when I open the file it looks foggy (due to the effect, I tried enhancing it and expanding the appearance to help it a little bit) and other times it is perfectly normal so I hope on the Jpeg it decides to cooperate with me! all in all, I got a lot of great feedback ranging from the concept of my logo, to the technical pieces of it and it really helped me improve it and I think that is clear through the changes in my rough draft and my final draft and I am happy with the results! I think my initials and the play on gravity or magnetism emphasizes the focus on me.

Thanks for all the help!

As for the resources I used this time for the W, I found two ways to make a metal look. One way was with the graphic pen effect but that didn’t work at all for me… here are the links to those sources. http://vectips.com/tutorials/create-a-brushed-metal-texture/ http://layersmagazine.com/brushed-metal-effect-in-adobe-illustrator.html Final Magnet
